What is This?

How many files do you have on your computer?

How many times have you downloaded a file, examined it, decided it can be useful sometime in the future and then stored it somewhere on your computer?

How many times do you reuse those stored files? How many times have you downloaded files again?

How many times have you remembered having a file or document that you finally need but you can't remember its name and where you stored it?

How many times have you examined filenames without being able to remember the contents?

How much of your precious time do you lose checking and rechecking the same file while searching for specific files?

What is this? will help you to manage your files by recording a description of the contents in an easy and unintrusive way.

Wit integrates with your Windows 95 or NT4.0 shell and is always ready to use in the context menu of files and Desktop objects.

Wit requires only a small amount of disk space and stores your data in a compact, quick database.

Wit provides these useful functions:

easy activation by standard Explorer context menu;
file information summary (name, size, date (access, creation, update), attributes, pic info);
view, update and delete file's description;
simple and quick search;
autoextract descriptions from archive files;
preview JPEG pictures (gray scale only for unregistered version);

Wit is easy to use. Simply click context mouse button (normally it is right mouse button) to activate context menu for a file and then select What is This? menu item. You can do this from Explorer, the Desktop and even from the standard Open Dialog. If the selected file has an entry in Wit's database, then Wit will show the associated description.

You can edit the description and it will be automatically saved when you close Wit.

You don't need to close Wit by hand. It will close by itself if you click anywhere outside Wit's window or if you change focus to another application.

Selecting the File Info tab will reveal more information about the physical file. This view is also automatically selected if you call Wit for a file without a database entry. If the file is a picture (GIF,JPG,BMP), Wit also gives you the picture pixel size and color depth.

Wit has a context menu that you can activate in the usual way (clicking the right mouse button):

Help will show this help guide;
Register will start the witreg.exe program to help you to pay for and register Wit;
Insert Key allows you to insert your name and registration code to unlock Wit (unregistered version can store only 50 database items);
Properties/Memo Color enables you to change the memo background color and Properties/Tab Color enables you to change selected tab color;
Properties/Memo Font enables you to change memo font.
Search activates a simple string search routine. You will be asked to insert a string to search for and the results are quickly shown.
